Common mobile learning mistakes you should avoid
Mobile learning, also known as mLearning, it is the new and innovative method of accessing learning contents using mobiles. Most people have access to at least one mobile device, which makes the mLearning a powerful learning strategy. Mobile learning helps learners to access the content from anywhere at any time. Learning on the go using mobile devices is very efficient and convenient. Since the mLearning helps to save time and provide effective learning, organizations are transforming their traditional training method to mLearning. As many organizations opt mLearning, they risk mistakes that could undermine their learning strategy. Let’s look at these common mistakes.
Mobile is not the same as desktop
Certain contents may be visually appealing and highly engaging on a desktop. These Contents while rendered on a mobile device it may not even function properly, it may not be as visually pleasing as seen on desktop. The common mistake made by the organization is that they take their existing desktop-designed learning and make it access it via mobile devices. This may not provide the desired result and would be ineffective for learning. In the mLearning, the whole design approach should be different. For a mobile, the content should be simpler, more streamlined and responsive to various displays.
Too much visual elements
This is a common mistake made by designers. To make it effective learning You often tend to add many highly interactive images, lots of visual elements, etc. Since in mobile devices, the screen area and the interface are much smaller, requiring less interaction from the learner is often the better choice. So, it is better to leave behind what you think of as effective learning and make it visually simple and compact.
Neglecting the human/emotional aspect of learning
In order to obtain effective mLearning, you should make sure that your mobile learning is friendly, conversational, maintains an informal tone, and uses active voice, and also, we should ensure that the interface is not frustrating to see or to interact. Mobile learning is an effective learning method with enormous potential. If you take precautions to avoid common mistakes, then your mobile learning experience would be more effective.
Too long
The human mind is prone to distraction very fast. If the content for mobile learning is too long, the learners tend to lose the concentration and would get distracted after a moment. Mobile learning is best utilized if it is used for learning in small bits or microlearning. So it is better to keep the content short in mobile learning.
Large audio and video contents
If we provide learning content in the form of audio files, we should make sure that they are accessible to a headphone. Most of the learners wouldn’t have access to headphones. So it is better to include transcripts of the audio for the learners who don’t use headphones. If the videos are too long, then the learners who have an issue on data coverage or lack wifi connection may face problem while streaming the content. Try to add transcriptions to the video and make the videos into bite-sized pieces to reduce the impact of slow streaming and issues in downloading.
